Eliminate Pop-Ups: The 4.0 Control Blueprint

I see this all the time...

Players pulling their paddle back behind them like they're warming up for a full tennis swing... and then wondering why everything goes into the net or pops up for an easy smash. These are the 5 fixes I teach every single student who comes to me struggling with CONTROL. No drilling required. Just awareness.

The Baby Bird Grip

One thing I notice... players gripping their paddle like they're trying to strangle it. Especially at the NVZ line. Think of it this way. You're holding a baby bird. You don't want to crush it... but you don't want to let it fly away either. That's a 3 out of 10 grip pressure.

The harder the ball comes at you, the LESS you want to grip it. Let your paddle absorb the ball. It will automatically spring back and give you a controlled return. Your opponents are doing the hard work for you... you just need to get out of the way and let physics handle it.

Red Light, Green Light

Remember this one. Ball way down low below the net? That's a red light. Don't swing hard. You're going to dump it into the net or send it sailing long. Hip height with a clean angle? Yellow light... proceed with caution if you have a good roll volley. Shoulder high? GREEN LIGHT. Let it fly. Hit down on it, not deep.

Bottom line? Hitting down is more important than hitting hard. A downward snap gets you more points than trying to blast it to the baseline. And your paddle comes right back to ready position for the next shot.

Try just ONE of these in your next game

Pick the one that hits closest to home. Use it for an entire session. Watch what happens to your unforced errors. Then come back for more.
